Expanding the Reach of Bee Guardians -Our Programs

The Bee Guardian Network forms viable alliances between farms and regional Bee Guardians, who are capable of maintaining locality based pollination networks. Bee Guardians will be capable of teaching natural methods to small-scale farms or others interested in sustainable approaches to pollination and bee-friendly agriculture. Bee Guardian’s will also be able to support each other with learned techniques and experience. Forming viable alliances between sustianable communities, farms and gardens maintaining locality based pollination.

Gateway Apprenticeship Program

There are a number of local programs awakening the love of bees in children 1st through 12th grade. Lisa McVicker is mentoring/working with children, ages 7-11, through Gateway Apprenticeship Program in North Boulder. Facilitated by Sage Hamilton, this homeschooling program serves a group of families dedicated to learning through the power of mythic stories and ritual theater, including art, song, music, practical arts and handwork.

Joy Kemna, the program’s master gardener, herbalist and medicine woman, also works with the bees, along with teaching the children to tend the garden that provides nectar plants for the entire season.

Working with bees directly, without cumbersome suits, the children and adults have an opportunity to serve the bees without fear, experiencing these gentle creatures and their habits. Lisa and Joy are committed to using organic, sustainable methods and bringing spiritual awareness to the process of caring for the bees.

Terra Malmstrom, the advisor for the Gateway program, is the science teacher at Shining Mountain Waldorf High School. She has been offering a class there, including Biodynamic approaches to caring for bees. Terra also offers summer camps through Shepherd Valley Waldorf School in bee care and bee-oriented activities, including beeswax candle making.
